Police are hunting down thugs who raided a private residence in Thika Town and gang raped four women on Sunday night.
The gang of four also robbed the family of Sh20,000, ATM cards and other valuables before escaping in their car which they abandoned in Kariobangi estate, Nairobi.
The women who include three sisters aged 16, 18 and 21 and their neighbour aged 18 are admitted at a local hospital where they are in a stable condition.
The three sisters’ father is also admitted at the hospital following serious injuries he sustained as he tried to save the girls from being raped.
Thika OCPD Paul Leiting said they believe the gang is hiding in Nairobi. According to reports, the four men armed with pistols struck at about 9 pm and stormed into the family’s house in the upcoming Ngoigwa estate.
They ransacked the house for valuables for almost four hours while holding those inside hostage.
“In the process, they stumbled upon beer that was in a store and started to drink. They got intoxicated before they turned on the four women in the house,†said a police officer who asked not to be named.
Leiting said they are pursuing various leads into the attack and hinted the attackers may have had prior information there was a meeting in the house.
Elsewhere in the city, police said they arrested 20 suspected muggers believed to be behind a series of attacks.
The arrests were made by an anti-mugging squad that has been formed to spearhead the operation.
Police boss Benson Kibui said they are targeting various hotspots that have been mentioned and where people have been attacked.
“Mugging is a form of robbery and those arrested will face the same charges,†said Kibui.
He added more officers have been recruited to the squad to hunt down the gangs that are on the loose and attack pedestrians.
