A 35-year-old man carried a meat cleaver onto a Chinese elementary school campus and began terrorizing children on the playground. Eight students, believed to be between 6 and 8 years old, were injured in the shocking assault.
A man with a kitchen knife attacked eight children at a primary school in Hubei province yesterday.
The incident took place at about midday when the man attacked pupils at a school in Macheng, a statement from the city’s government said. One of the children was seriously injured.
It is the latest in a series of attacks targeting school children on the mainland in recent years.
The suspect, Chen Zuihang, 35, comes Luoyuan county near Fuzhou in Fujian province, the government statement said. He was arrested at the scene.
Police are still investigating the motive for the attack.
The pupils were taken to Macheng City People’s Hospital for treatment.
One of the eight has been discharged. Two had surgery and were said to be in a stable condition.
Police were first called with a report that a man had broken into the school.
Another call to the police two minutes later said three pupils had been attacked.
The suspect was arrested two minutes after police arrived, the government statement said.
The school declined to comment on the incident yesterday.
A 58-year-old school principal in Hunan province was stabbed to death in January last year as he fended off a man who was attacking a pupil at a primary school.
The government has urged all schools to hire at least one full-time security guard.
The advice came shortly after a man attacked 23 children at a school in Henan province in December 2012.
The man was reported to be mentally unstable, the China Daily reported.
The city government in Macheng met yesterday to assess the situation after the attack. Senior local government officials also visited the injured children in hospital.
