Louis Otieno, musician Prezzo and IEBC tops Google’s list of popular searches in Kenya

Google has announced its annual Zeitgeist, a look at 2012 through the collective eyes of the world on the web, offering a unique perspective on the year’s major events and top trends based on Google searches in Kenya.

The results gave an interesting insight on trending searches, the most-searched personalities as well as technologies that captured Kenyans’ imagination.
Leading the list of overall trending searches in Kenya was the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

Also among the top-five were the social media site Facebook, the late American singer Whitney Houston who died in February, mobile video search engine Tubidy and Euro 2012.

Kenyans also went online to seek information about personalities making the news, with politicians dominating.

They included the late Njenga Karume, George Saitoti and John Michuki. Others were former adviser to Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Miguna Miguna, and presidential aspirant Peter Kenneth.

Media personality Louis Otieno as well as musician Prezzo who participated in the Big Brother Africa Stargame were also among celebrities most searched for on Google.

Olympics star David Rudisha and former deputy Chief Justice Nancy Baraza also made it to the list.

Kenya’s online trends also revealed that art transcends boundaries with Houston topping the list. Other trending artistes were James Ingram, Eddie Murphy, Bobby Brown, Psy of the popular hit Gangnam style, among others.

Local musicians Prezzo and Camp Mulla also made it to the list of top searched artistes.

Soap operas

Sports also generated a lot of Google searches, especially the English Premier League and Olympics.

The ‘what is’ query was dominated by ethnicity and diseases such as cancer, ebola, HIV and Aids, typhoid, malaria and stress.

Kenyans’ love for Spanish telenovelas was revealed in the entertainment searches with Eva Luna, and Triumph of Love leading. BBA, Shuga and KulaHappy YouTube videos also featured.

The global Zeitgeist website was launched Wednesday and will host all 838 top-ten lists from 55 countries.
