Seventeen people died Tuesday morning after two buses collided head-on at Ipingoni between Mtito Andei and Kambu on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

Confirming the incident, police County Commander Racheal Kipsoi said 14 people died instantly, two died while undergoing treatment at Makindu general hospital while one died on the way to the hospital.

Ms Kipsoi said 61 people were injured in the 4am incident, 41 of them seriously, and are undergoing treatment at the same hospital.

Most of those injured are women passengers, she added.

The police commander said the accident involved a Spring bus bound for Mombasa when it collided with an Horizon bus carrying passengers from Mombasa to Nairobi.
