Police have shot dead a man believed to be the terrorist who hurled a grenade into a crowd in Mpambe area of Eastleigh on Sunday night.
The suspect in his mid twenties was gunned down during an operation in Biafra within Eastleigh.
“We have been pursuing him since the time the attack occurred and we finally got where he was hiding. But when he was challenged to surrender he refused and he was finally killed while trying to shoot at our officers,†Nairobi Police chief Benson Kibue said.
Kibue said they had established that the man travelled from Mandera between Tuesday and Thursday with the sole mission of participating in the attack.
“He came purposely because of this attack, because we have established that he arrived in Nairobi on 4th, 5th, or 6th,†Kibue said.
He said no identification documents were recovered on the slain man but they have information that he goes by the name Donald Jeff or Bernard Oduor alias Namudin.
The suspect who is from Nyanza was killed in a major security operation mounted in the area at 5am on Tuesday, following intelligence reports he had taken refuge there.
“He is the one who hurled the grenade that injured four people and we believe he has links with Al Shabaab,†Kibue added.
The Sunday night attack left four people wounded, but they have all been discharged from hospital.
