Police are holding a woman who killed three children, among them her week old son, in Korogocho early Tuesday morning.

The woman, Catherine Muthoni, 20, is alleged to have slit open her son’s belly, removed his intestines and eaten them before going to her friend’s house and killing two other children.

Her friend, Nelius Muthoni, 23, said Catherine knocked on her door at around 6:10am and when let in, she closed and barricaded it with a couch before she started strangling her.

“She kept asking me why I named my son Peter Kimani… She told me a lot of things and even said that there were demons inside me,” Nelius said.

Nelius who was still being monitored after delivering her son through Caesarean section ten days ago, managed to slip away from Catherine’s grasp after a struggle.

Her daughter, Nyambura Gatei, 4, and ten-day-old son Peter were in bed.

“I ran out of the house to seek for help from neighbours and when they arrived at the house, they found Catherine holding my son by the neck and underneath her feet was my daughter. She was stepping on her neck,” Nelius said.

Neighbours removed the suspect from the house and tried to rescue the children who were pronounced dead at a nearby clinic.

After being driven out of the house, the suspect is said to have run to the Korogocho Administration Police Post where she reported that she had killed her own child.

“As we were interrogating her, neighbours who realised that Nelius’ children had died also came here. They wanted to beat her but we protected her,” Kariobangi chief Nyabuto Omache said.

Mr Omache said residents who wanted to lynch the suspect stoned a police vehicle transporting her to Kariobangi Police Station. She was later taken to Huruma Police Station because the irate crowd followed her.

DID NOT SEEM SHAKEN

Upon interrogation, the chief said, the suspect admitted that she had killed her child and eaten parts of his body. A neighbour who was at the police post said the suspect did not seem shaken and was even asking for a soda at that time.

The suspect is said to have been living with her aunt in Korogocho after she separated with her husband with whom she lived with in Huruma.

A week ago, she gave birth to her son at the Pumwani Maternity Hospital and returned to her aunt’s house when she was discharged.

Nelius said she had been friends with the suspect since February last year. They had been in the same self-help group for the last seven months.

“We had quarrelled at some point but we had reconciled… I do not know why she had to kill my children” she said.

Kenya Police spokesperson Gatiria Mboroki said the suspect would be detained at the police station until investigations are concluded before she appears in court.

“She will also undergo mental examination,” Ms Mboroki said.
