New York Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara has an interview with Muscle and Fitness that started off as a talk about muscle and fitness but quickly veered into a fascinating discussion about faith, abstinence, monarchy and his habit of telling people he works construction.
After telling the magazine’s Matt Tuthill that he’s never had a drop of alcohol in his life, Amukamara was asked about one of his nicknames.
You said one of your nicknames is “the black Tim Tebow.”[Laughs] Yeah, some people call me the black Tim Tebow.
Well, Tim Tebow famously said that he was a virgin. Are you? Are you open to talking about that?
Yeah, I am a virgin. I’m not ashamed to say that.
Beyond their devotion to their faith and waiting for marriage, there are some other similarities between Tebow and Amukamara. Both rock flat-tops, starred for college football powerhouses (Florida and Nebraska, respectively), were selected in the middle part of the first round of the NFL draft and had a habit of getting pranked by their teammates. Their differences are a little more pronounced, namely in that Amukamara is spending his week focusing on shutting down Steve Smith while Tebow is taking pictures with co-eds and weighing contract offers from Russians and guys in KISS.
Ordinarily, “Black Tim Tebow” would be a fine nickname, but does someone named Prince actually need a nickname? You can’t get cooler than being named Prince, especially when you’re actually a Nigerian prince. Amukamara explained his royal lineage to Muscle and Fitness.
My dad is a chief in a village in Nigeria and since I’m the first son, I get the title as prince. I think if I wanted to become a chief there, I would have to live there, so it would be whenever I’m ready.
The 24-year-old was born and raised in the United States. He says he doesn’t see himself ever living in Nigeria, especially now that he’s engaged to a woman he met in New York. Amukamara didn’t tell her he played football, but he also didn’t tell his usual fib of saying he worked construction. After talking to her for a few days, Amukamara realized he’d have to say what he did for a living. When he said he played for the Giants, she thought Prince played for the San Francisco baseball team.
“That’s when I thought she might be a keeper,” he said.
