A pastor of a Nairobi-based church was on Wednesday arraigned in court charged with stealing a motor vehicle from a company she owned with her Cameroonian husband.
Pastor Hellen Caroline Wanjiru of Lovespring Church in Nairobi’s Ngara area, denied stealing a BMW valued at Sh2 million, the property of La Merco Limited, a company she co-owned with Mr Fouasso Malgore, her husband of 17 years.
The court heard that the accused, jointly with others who are still at large, committed the offence on June 21 this year at the city’s Yaya Center shopping mall while the complainant was in Sudan.
Police charged her with theft by director and are preparing more charges against her, the prosecution said.
State Counsel N. O. Ombati urged the court to impose stiff bail terms on the accused saying police were apprehensive she might abscond.
But through her lawyer, Stephen Kibunja, the 41-year-old mother of two, alleged that the charges were malicious and meant to harass her.
She charged that the husband authorised her to dispose of the vehicle to raise money to maintain the children when he was in Khartoum, Sudan for three years.
Kibera Principal Magistrate Mrs Juma Osoro released her on Sh200,000 bond with a similar surety and set the case to be heard on November 5.
