Police in Murang’a County have arrested a suspect who was in a gang of four men which had attempted to rob a man of Sh250,000.

Murang’a County Commissioner Ms Kula Hache described the suspect as a ‘most wanted’ gangster.

He is also a member of a gang which has been kidnapping and robbing residents of Murang’a South and pretending to be police officers, she added.

Three other suspects escaped in a private vehicle during the Thursday evening incident.

Police recovered handcuffs from the arrested suspect.

Ms Hache said the men had trailed the victim after he withdrew the money from a bank in neighbouring Thika Town.

As he approached Kabati area, the gang blocked his vehicle and one of the thugs alighted armed with handcuffs.

COMMOTION

“The man was pretending to be a police officer and as he attempted to handcuff the victim who was still inside his vehicle, Administration Police officers on patrol shot in the air on seeing the commotion and hearing screams,” said the County Commissioner.

The suspect was apprehended with the help from members of the public.

His three accomplices said to be in police jackets fled using their getaway vehicle.

Ms Hache said the gangster was also found with several notes in foreign currency including 30 US dollars.

She said according to investigations and descriptions given by residents, the suspect was among a gang of robbers which had been robbing locals and kidnapping them pretending to be police officers.

The suspect who was being interrogated at Makuyu Police Station denied that he wanted to rob the man and claimed he was a car tyre dealer.

POLICE HANDCUFFS

He could however not explain how he got the police handcuffs.

“We are happy that we are about to crack the ring of a gang which has been reigning terror in Murang’a South,” Ms Hache said.

The area has become notorious with kidnappings being carried out by armed gangs in police uniform.

The County Commissioner said police would carry out a massive manhunt for the gang in a bid to end crime in the area.

Meanwhile, a  business woman was injured on the head and robbed of close to Sh100,000 by a gang of four men at Mukuyu market on Thursday evening.

Police said Ms Nancy Wangari was about to close her cereals shop when four men on a motor bike and armed with an AK47 rifle accosted her and demanded cash from her which was in a bag she was holding.

One gang member hit her on the head with the gun butt and also shot twice in the air as the thugs escaped in various directions.
