The Murang’a County Assembly has stopped the payment of the rent to the official residence of Deputy Governor Gakure Monyo.

The MCAs yesterday ordered the county treasury to immediately stop paying the rent until the saga surrounding the residence is resolved.

The assembly also demanded an audit report on the rent for the residence located in Gatanga subcounty. “The finance officer at the county government should immediately stop paying the rent and submit an audit report,” said nominated MCA Mary Njoroge.

The assembly raised concerns over the amount of rent for Monyo’s residence. A source told the Star that the palatial residence attracts a monthly rent of Sh200,000, which the MCAs feel is too high.

“Rent for palatial homes in Murang’a is below Sh50,000 and we don’t understand why that of the deputy governor has attracted such a high amount, which is a burden to taxpayers,” said the source who declined to be named.

Majority leader Peter Kihungi said the assembly lacked professional services in the last budget making process. “We had a hard time last year when making the budget and this year we want to actively play our oversight role,” Kihungi said.

The saga surrounding official residence of the executive attracted the county assembly’s attention with focus on the deputy governor.

The assembly’s Public Service Committee chairman Jesse Mburu said Mathioya subcounty only raises Sh700,000 monthly despite a potential of more than Sh3 million.

Mburu said his committee witnessed the county government employees working in “extreme” hardship conditions. He said those who clean the markets lack protective gear.

Mburu said the employees also reported that despite the county having a fleet of vehicles, none has been allocated to revenue collection crew in Mathioya.

The committee demanded employment of chief officers in various departments.
