A man thought to be a prominent blogger was Saturday arrested in Mombasa and taken to Nairobi by road after being questioned by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
Sources told the Sunday Nation that Mr Abraham Mutai, who supposedly uses the Twitter account @ItsMutai, was arrested at about 1 p.m.
“We don’t know what his crime is but he was picked up by the CID officers for questioning before being put in a vehicle, and is on his way to Nairobi,” police sources said.
Speaking on the phone from Nairobi, the suspect’s lawyer Mugambi Laibuta confirmed his client had been arrested in Mombasa for undisclosed reasons.
“Yes, he called at 1 p.m. to inform me about his arrest and he sounded composed as we spoke on the phone,” he said.
The online account associated with Mr Mutai on the popular micro-blogging site has in recent months been used to post allegations of corruption and misuse of funds in Isiolo, Wajir and Mombasa counties.
The blogger has also posted claims of impropriety at the Geothermal Development Company.
“Probably it is such blogs that have landed him in trouble. But I am yet to confirm this from him,” said the lawyer.
When contacted, Mombasa County CID boss Henry Ondiek said he was not aware of the arrest and referred the Sunday Nation to the area OCPD Jeffery Mayek who declined to give details of the arrest.
Mr Mayek said the police had arrested many people and he could not be sure who we were referring to.
But he said the only person who had been arrested in Mombasa and was being transferred to Nairobi was “a conman who allegedly acquired Sh2.6 million fraudulently”.
