Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka will be forced to defect to ODM to be NASA flagbearer Raila Odinga’s running mate on August 8, a governor has said.
Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya on Tuesday said Raila will appear on the ballot for ODM and not NASA, as the latter is a coalition and not a party.
“According to election laws, Musyoka will have to move to ODM, even if it means temporarily, to be allowed to be Raila’s running mate because they must be in the same party,” he said.
Kalonzo is now technically an ODM member, Oparanya said.
NASA has yet to fully comply with registration requirements, he said in Iguhu Health Centre, Ikolomani
NASA named Raila its presidential candidate and Musyoka his running mate on April 27 after weeks of talks between the five NASA co-principals.
They are Raila (ODM), Kalonzo (Wiper), Musalia Mudavadi (ANC), Moses Wetang’ula (Ford Kenya) and Isaac Rutto (CCM).
Oparanya said NASA will only sponsor the presidency but candidates from all the five anchor parties will run for other seats.
The governor said he will sell the ODM agenda “because NASA affiliates will share the national cake based on the number of seats they win”.
However, the deputy ODM leader’s remarks are contrary to the power-sharing agreement signed by the NASA co-principals and deposited with the Registrar of Political Parties.
In the agreement, each of the five co-principals has been allocated three Cabinet slots and other state appointments should NASA win the election.
Oparanya also dismissed reports that ODM has agreed to leave key seats in Western for Ford Kenya and ANC after Mudavadi and Wetang’ula sacrificed their presidential ambitions for Raila.
A week ago, Likuyani MP Enock Kibunguchy and Western ANC coordinator Major Malala said ODM has received the lion’s share in NASA.
They said the Orange Party should cede ground on key county positions in the spirit of coalition-building and negotiated democracy.
