Global IT giant Google is set to launch a low-cost smartphone in the Kenyan market next month.
The tech company in collaboration with Infinix Mobility plans to release the device as part of the Android One roll out by Google.
The Hot2 smartphone will be sold exclusively through e-commerce platform, Jumia, which has lately become a launching pad for some devices in the Kenyan market.
Android One, which made its African debut in Nigeria, will also be available in Ghana, Ivory Coast, Egypt and Morocco.
The phone has been priced at about Sh8,961 ($87), targeting the lower end of the market, with the official local price yet to be announced.
The Android One programme began in India nearly a year ago and is now in an additional six African countries. The six African countries will join the 10 countries where partners have already released Android One phones.
Google is targeting users with limited connectivity and will later in the year unveil an offline feature of video app YouTube. This feature will make it possible for people to take videos offline to watch later during short periods of low or no Internet connectivity.
“Simply having an Internet connection is not enough. It is important that people getting started with the Internet have a great, reliable, and relevant experience right away. This can be a challenge in places where local content may be limited, connectivity slow or intermittent, and quality phones costly,” said Google vice president product management Caeser Sengupta in a post.
The Infinix HOT 2 phone comes with a quad-core MediaTek processor, dual SIM slots, front and rear-facing cameras, a FM radio tuner, and 16 GB internal memory. The standard version, with 1GB memory, is available in black, white, blue and red, and the premium version (with 2GB memory) is available in gold.
