Claire Matheri, 7, expected to make full recovery after Sunday night accident.
A seven-year-old child has been upgraded to fair condition at a hospital after being hit by a car Sunday night – while in her own apartment.
Claire Matheri was seriously injured after being pinned underneath a car that crashed into her Hefner Hollow apartment, near Lyrewood Lane and Wilshire
Bldv, around 8 p.m.
Two people were questioned at the scene, police say, but both were released.
No arrests have been made.
Claire was helping her mother clean the downstairs area when the entire vehicle made it through the wall.
The girl’s mother called family for help.
“She was hysterical, and she was like ‘my baby is pinned up under the car!’ Carolyn Harvey, Claire’s grandmother said Sunday night. “So I rushed
over here as quick as I could.”
Emergency crews managed to free Claire from the wreckage.
At Children’s Hospital, her father, Peter Matheri, says Claire suffered two punctures in her lungs
“She just told me, ‘Daddy, I was just sweeping the floor and ‘boom’. Next thing, I’m stuck on the wall and I can’t get up,’” he said.
Matheri says Claire is now in fair condition and is expected to fully recover.
He said she loves to fix hair and help mom around the apartment.
Her four siblings were upstairs at the time of the accident.
“I just thought of my baby and I just cried,” Peter thought after seeing the hole in the wall. “I literally cried. It was so unbelievable.”
“There were two people involved in the accident that were inside the vehicle that both fled on foot,” MSgt Gary Knight said Monday. “Officers were
able to locate two people later, however at the time they were unable to confirm exactly what role those two people played.”
Matheri has a message for the two suspects on the run.
“I would just like them to man up,” he said. “After what happened and what they did, I’d just like them to come forward and see the little angel
that we got.”
Claire is expected to celebrate her 8th birthday later this wee
